All ranks carried a toggle rope, several of which could be linked together to form longer ropes for scaling cliffs or other obstacles.

After three unsuccessful attempts to scale the cliff, Porteous finally managed to climb up the bed of a stream and pulled the others up using toggle ropes.

To minimise the guard left with the captives, the Commandos tied the prisoners'hands with the six-foot toggle ropes each carried, and required them to hold up their trousers.

It was heavy and awkward to manhandle, particularly over rough ground and in urban areas; in the latter, it was recommended that toggle ropes be used to manoeuvre the weapon into position.

On the evening on 5 June 1944 the battalion was transported to France in fifty aircraft . Each man carried a knife, toggle rope, escape kit with French currency, and two 24-hour ration packs in addition to their normal equipment, in all totalling 70 pounds.
